Domain name sales / xyz1 - My domain name auction and listing site
« Last post by Kuffy on November 13, 2016, 05:41:59 PM »
Well, I'd like to tell you that there is some deep significance in the name xyz1 for my domain name listing site, but the truth is far more prosaic. Some years ago I registered the name because I noticed that it was being used as an example name on quite a few sites. I've kept it, but haven't used it much. During an over-caffeinated session on the computer at McDonalds ( I was testing the free WiFi as well as the coffee), I decided to use it to create a domain name auction and listing site, and this is the result.

xyz1 - a private domain name listing and name auction site

The site is still under development, so I will be adding names, and filling in the help and information pages over the next few weeks.
Domaininvestors tools / Top lists

Top lists are a pretty old concept, and there are so many cheats and spammers around, that I don't think it is worth running a general top list. However, the concept can be used to move surfers around between your parked sites if you are administering your own parking. I set up a top list for domain tools on this site -

I've used WSWD hosting for over a year now. They offer outstanding value, with plans starting at $12 per year. Their shared hosting plans are  well managed with almost perfectr up-time and fast responses. They aren't over-sold, and are ideal for a domain name sales site. Plans include cpanaland Softaculous CMS installation software.

Presta Shop / Installing Presta Shop
« Last post by Kuffy on September 30, 2016, 02:04:09 AM »
I thought it would be interesting to use Presta Shop to sell some of my personal items. I've installed the software using Softaculous, and, as usual, it was really easy. Presta shop contains a load of sample records to help you learn how to use it. Of course, you don't want these in your live version, so they have provided a data base cleaning utility to remove them. To activate this, follow the following steps.

Go to the "Modules > Modules" page.
Find the "Database Cleaner" module and click its "Install" button.
You are directly taken to its configuration page (if not, click its "Configuration" button).
Read and accept the warning, then click the "Delete Catalog" button: it will delete all your products and their attributes, manufacturers, etc.
Read and accept the warning, then click the "Delete Orders & Customers" button: it will delete all your customers and their orders, carts, etc.
Click the "Check & fix" button to refine your database integrity constraints.
Click the "Clean & optimize" button to reorganizes the physical storage of table data and associated index data, to reduce storage space and improve I/O efficiency when accessing the tables.
THERE IS NO WAY BACK. Be sure to only click these buttons if you do intend to wipe your database from its default content.

SEO and website promotion / Update your site every day

Google likes active sites, so make sure you change your site every day. Add posts to forums, add pictures to galleries, and add a newsitem to your blog. I know this seems to be obvious, but quite a lot of webmasters don't do it.

If you have got a lot of sites, then put a list of your sites onto a web page, and work through this list.
Simple Machines Forum / Adding Google analytics to a SMF forum

There doesn't seem to be much documentation about this, but in fact it is quite an easy process.

Download the zip file from this page -
Go to Admin > Package manager > download packages
Click on the upload a package link at the bottom
Upload the zip file you saved
Load the packages list, and click on install for the analytics package
It will show a box for an UA number - click on the get one link
Register with Google end enter the number the give you

You can check that it is working by logging onto your SMF site, and stay logged in. Open Google analytics in a new window, and click on the real time link. It should show at least one person on your site.
